Learning by Hearings Celebrates Civic Learning Week

Last week, the Learning by Hearings team participated in a student-centered event at Wayne Law and traveled to West Michigan to attend two conferences as a part of Civic Learning Week! Civic Learning Week is celebrated throughout the nation every year to bring focus to the importance of civic education.

On Tuesday, March 11, the LbH team supported and facilitated at Elevating Student Voices, a program that invites 70 students from different schools in the metro Detroit area to come together and discuss democracy and what it’s like to be a teenager in 2025.

On Wednesday, we traveled to Muskegon, Michigan, to attend the West Michigan Social Studies Collaborative, hosted by Muskegon and Kent ISDs. We had the chance to hear from students who participate in We the People, a program hosted by the Center for Civic Education.

The last stop on our trip was the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we co-sponsored the MI Civics Coalition Summit. As members of the coalition, we had the opportunity to meet like-minded educators from all over Michigan, run a session where we shared our materials, and learn from one another. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Thank you to our partners—we could not do this work without your support!
